F1: Hamilton wins the Hungarian GP

At the start of the GP Lewis Hamilton was leading into Turn 1. Vettel tried  to hold of Grosjean on the outside of the track.

Rosberg meanwhile, who started from 4th position had contact with Massa’s frontwing at Turn 5.

Rosberg had to go wide and settled for 12th postion, then he overtoke some cars bringing him to 7th but then he retired 10 laps before the end of the race due a engine failure.

Hamilton was leading ahead of Vettel and Grosjean until the first pitstops came around the laps 9-13.

Vettel already had to defend his 2nd position against Grosjean and surprisingly struggled with the handling of the car.

After Vettel made his first pitstop, he came back behind McLaren driver Jenson Button, who held him off for 33 laps, what was a quite amazing perfomance from the brit.

So Vettel held up Grosjean, and some laps later Alonso was becoming faster, so it became a four way battle for 2nd.

Vettel finally got past Button for 2nd and Grosjean was also trying to pass Button, but with contact resulted to a penalty after the race. After Grosjeans 2nd pitstop, he was behind Massa.

Grosjean was much faster than the Ferrari driver and tried a brave outside move into the blind Turn 5 corner, which was succesfull but illegal. He had all four wheels off the track and he was over the line, so he gained an advantage over Massa.

The frenchman got a drive through penalty and later made his third pitstop, he ended up in 6th position.

His teammate Raikönnen however had a fantastic strategy and despite the hot weather there he managed his tires very well and made only two pitstops.

So he came up to 2nd, but Vettel was close behind him and tried a ”Grosjean move” on the outside of Turn 5.

But Raikkönnen defended and kept his 2nd place until the end.  Webber had a great race, coming from 10th on the grid after his bad luck in Qualifying to 4th in the race.

Hamilton controlled his lead and won the Hungarian GP after 70 laps. It was his first GP win of the season and the third for Mercedes AMG Petronas.

Sutil had a horrible 100th GP, he had problems starting his car again at his first pitstop and had to retire.

Williams meanwhile scored their first points of the season with Maldonado finishing 10th.

Teammate Bottas had to retire after an engine failure.

The next race of the Formula 1 World Championship is on the 25th of August for the Belgium GP at Spa-Francorchamps.

Silverstone Young Driver Test 2013: The Driver Line-Up

Note: The Young Driver Test (17th-19th of July) at Silverstone is also a tyre test, because Pirelli is planning to bring the new tires to Hungary.

So the current driver’s in the teams, not only the rookies, will compete the YDT to give feedback of the new tires.

2013 Chinese Grand Prix Preview

The wait has been long for the Formula 1 fans throughout the world for the third race of the season. Three weeks ago Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing took the honors at Malaysia, though Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber have negotiated to an extent, Sebastian Vettel has clearly come out and said that he had no regrets for winning the race three weeks ago and that is what is was being paid to do.

Last time this year in China, the Silver Arrows team locked out the front row with Nico Rosberg on pole and Nico Rosberg took it all the way to the chequered flag without putting a foot wrong giving himself and Mercedes their first Grand Prix victory since 1955.

However, this year is different from last year.Last year the team made use of their unique Double Drag Reduction System (DDRS) giving them the boost on the straights and top speed. This year too they are contenders for winning the race as they have the second best car after Red Bull in qualifying trim and race trim. It wouldn’t be surprising if they beat the Bulls on Sunday using a clever tyre strategy and look after them for a longer time during a stint.

Lotus too are expected to challenge the above two teams as they can win the tyre preservation game very well.

Ferrari are bringing updates to this race and will be testing them on Friday, they are expected to be quick in qualifying.

McLaren after their dismal start to the season, for the first time since 2009 are bringing a raft of updates and the team has already told both their drivers that they have no time whatsoever to waste on Friday. The team believe that they have pinpointed the exact issues with their 2013 challenger and are hoping it to fix it this weekend.

Among the midfield teams Force India are expected to be good around the Shanghai International Circuit as their cars have good straight line speeds.

Sauber too have decided to bring test parts to this race and examine them on Friday.

Williams are expected to continue with their problems and are not expected to come over them.

Toro Rosso are still where they were last year and are not expected to challenge teams like Force India and Sauber just yet.

Marussia with Jules Bianchi have impressed so far this season with a car which he has driven for a very less duration of time in testing. The team have said that they will be bringing updates to this race and close the gap further more to teams such as Toro Rosso.

Caterham on the other hand have been on the last row ever since the start of the season and are making slow progress, the team is expected to remain where they are even this weekend.

A lap around the Shanghai International Circuit

Turns 1 and 2 make up a very long right-hand curve which leads immediately into turns 3 and 4, a very long left-hand curve. One and two are far more difficult – a lift on entry followed by various taps of the throttle and brakes are needed so the car maintains balance throughout. It also becomes blind towards the middle of the corner. Three and four are nowhere near as difficult but a good exit is needed to gain speed down the following straight and through turn 5. Turn 6 is a second gear, right-handed hairpin with plentiful run-off. Turns 7 and 8 make up a high speed chicane – the left-right complex sees a constant G-force of 3 and a minimum speed of about 100 mph. Turns 9 and 10 immediately follow – two slow left-handers which require a good exit to gain speed down the next straight. Turns 11 and 12 effectively make up a slow left-right chicane where the use of kerbs are important but traction is low. Turn 13 is a very long right-hander which becomes less and less tight, and a very good exit is important as the longest straight in F1 follows. It is the equivalent to 11 football pitches laid end to end, or the same length as three and a half of the world’s biggest aircraft carriers Turn 14 is a hairpin at the end of the straight – the second gear corner is a prime overtaking spot as DRS is available in the run up to the corner. Turn 16 is the last corner – a fourth-gear left-hander which requires a quick tap on the brakes – braking early can be more effective as you can then carry more speed through the corner and then down the pit straight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVGnmXc5eBE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The total length of the circuit is 5.451 km (3.387 mi), which is about average for a Formula One circuit. The lap record was set by Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher in 2004. He completed one lap of the circuit in 1:32.238.

From the weather point of view it is expected to be 100% dry throughout the weekend which is crucial for teams such as McLaren.

From the tyre point of view Pirelli are bringing the Pirelli P Zero yellow (soft)and Pirelli P Zero White (medium). The driver who nurses his tyre will be standing on the top step of the podium on Sunday.

Marussia signs Luiz Razia for second 2013 Formula 1 seat

Luiz Razia has secured the Marussia Formula 1 seat left vacant by Timo Glock’s pre-season departure from the team.

Brazilian 23-year-old Razia joins fellow GP2 graduate Max Chilton in an all-rookie line-up at the squad.

Razia will drive the new Marussia in Wednesday’s Jerez test session, although the team will start the day late following Chilton’s crash due to suspension failure on Tuesday.

“The past two seasons in GP2 have been all about proving that I have what it takes and that I’m ready,” said Razia.

“This coming season will be all about rewarding the faith the team have shown in me.

“This is an important year for the Marussia F1 team in terms of maintaining the momentum from a very positive 2012 season. I look forward to making a valuable contribution to that.”

Razia became a GP2 title contender last year in his fourth season in the series, eventually finishing runner-up to Davide Valsecchi.

Team boss John Booth said he had always expected Razia to blossom after initially hiring him as reserve driver for the then Virgin branded F1 team in 2010.

“We had every expectation that he would progress to the extent that he has,” said Booth.

”’He is a very quick and tenacious driver who battled hard to the runner-up spot last year.

“Together with Max, we are fielding a young but incredibly ambitious pairing and we look forward to seeing what they can achieve.”

Marussia’s announcement means that the only vacancy remaining on the 2013 F1 grid is the second Force India seat.

In addition to his 2010 run with Virgin/Marussia (pictured), Razia has also tested F1 cars with Toro Rosso, Force India and Caterham.

Marussia reveals MR02 launch date

Marussia has become the final Formula 1 team to announce its 2013 launch date, as it confirmed the covers will come off the MR02 on the morning of the opening test day.

The unveiling will take place in the Jerez pitlane on the morning of Tuesday February 5.

Caterham is set to launch its new car at the same time.

Marussia has hailed its 2013 car as the start of a new era, as it will be the first car designed completely under its new technical structure, featuring Pat Symonds as a consultant and using windtunnel technology for the first time.

But rookie Max Chilton is the only driver currently signed by Marussia, as it released Timo Glock last week in order to hire a funded driver.

GP2 runner-up Luiz Razia has been strongly linked to the vacant seat.

Max Chilton to make F1 debut for Marussia in 2013

Max Chilton will make his Formula One race debut for Marussia next season, the MArussia F1 team has confirmed. 

Max Chilton will partner Timo Glock next year, replacing Charles Pic who will  be driving for Caterham next season.

“It’s hard to put into words how I’m feeling today,” said Chilton.

“I am very fortunate to have spent the last six races with the Marussia F1 Team as reserve driver, which means that instead of a standing start, I am already up to speed and at ease with the people, the culture, the systems and of course, the 2012 package.

“During the period since the Japanese Grand Prix, I have watched at very close quarters the incredible commitment and determination to succeed that saw everyone in the team pushing until the very last race. I feel very lucky to be able to embark on my F1 racing career with this group of people.”

“Pre-season testing is just a few weeks away, so my focus now is to continue my physical preparation whilst spending as much time as possible working with the technical team to help develop the car I will drive in my debut F1 season.”

Chilton, 21, drove for the team during the first practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this year, as well as at the Young Drivers’ Test sessions.

He spent the last three seasons in GP2, finishing fourth in this year’s championship with two wins for Carlin. He is the younger brother of World Touring Car Championship driver Tom Chilton.

Marussia F1 team principal John Booth said: “We have spent a significant amount of time evaluating his performances during 2012, both in our own car in a testing situation and also from the pit wall as we monitored his progress alongside the other members of our junior talent pool during Grand Prix support races.

“We felt confident enough in his ability and potential to appoint him to the role of reserve driver in September and since that time his development has been rapid in all aspects. First and foremost, he has shown himself to be extremely capable in the car.

“Most recently, in Abu Dhabi, he was put to the test in a competitive environment which included providing him with an opportunity to demonstrate his outright pace and consistency over a single lap. We saw just how much he has progressed even since the Silverstone test in the summer and through the succession of GP2 races thereafter, when he achieved two pole positions and two race wins.

“Not only that, Max very quickly embedded himself within the team, thanks in no small part to the fact that he is a lively and affable character who we’ve enjoyed having around. Having been integral to our race weekend engineering environment for the past three months already – as well as having undertaken a significant part of our simulator programme – Max has already found his feet.”
